music video analysis

classic & timeless: jesus of suburbia / green day

this music video has a grey/blue colour pallete which fluctuates throughout. there are lots of varied angles in the shots, and different perspectives from all the people in the video. like the song it establishes a story, of st. jimmy, and his every day life. the camera unfocuses at some point, and it looks very natural, like a normal video camera would record, adding to the flare of the story. the montage of shots in the bedroom scene establishes a very rock and roll fast paced life style. unfocused hand held camera shots help establish the rock and roll life style too, very edgy and uncut. lots of footage to use for each scene. whats on screen reflects the lyrics. dark lighting for a dark path of drugs and addiction and sex. dirty and dangerous looking locations used.  the fish eye lense in the bathroom scene helps show the whole room and the graffiti jimmy covers the room in. slow mo of the fight in the parking lot helps audience to understand whats going on bc theres no sound only the song. front track of jimmy wrecking the supermarket allows audience to see his not 'i dont care' attitude. dark lighting in home: bad home life, broken relationship with his mom.

one i hate: hello kitty / avril lavigne

i feel like the cutting is too jumpy through out the video, even though it does establish locations and settings thoroughly. not many varied shots, mostly mid shots and close ups, which only really focus on avril. the forward tracking of avril isn't really done that well and it zooms while tracking, which creates a jumpy effect. the effect of speeding up people's actions is really weird and uncomfortable. the change to a black and white filter is really random and uncalled for. at some points the music is not cut to the actions which doesn't all make sense when the audience watches it.

current fave: modern baseball / your graduation

montage of lingerie in room and trophies establishes contrast between genders, so it shows a relationship. the voiceover of an answerphone helps establish story. zoom to close up on guy in the middle (brendan) from a long shot shows he is the one in relationship. cut to black for 0.5s then song starts and he wakes up in bed. birds eye view and zoom out helps view facial expression well. zoom outs in most scene help show brendan needs help and his relationship is isolating him as he never speaks because his girl does all the talking constantly. dark scenes: depression. everyone moving, him dead still: isolated. swings in winter: should be cute, reflects lonely.  birds eye shots of band: shows audience enjoyment, well liked by fans, involved with fans. empty transitions through locations, almost a pan into the next location, empty. fast montage of cuddles and kisses in bed show they really did love each other. mostly mid shots.
